Falls of Makahiku
About 0.5 miles into the Pipiwai Trail hike, you will come to a viewpoint, and across the valley you’ll see the awesome 200-foot Makahiku Falls, ensconced in one of the lushest cliffsides on Maui.

So dense is the covering of green foliage and moss, you’ll be hard pressed to find a bare rock on the entire cliff face in front of you!
Makahiku in Hawaiian translates to “cathedral-like cliffs,” referring to the majestic cliffs from whence the water falls, as you stand at the base of the waterfall and look up.
The water becomes part of the Ohe’o Gulch that exits into the Pacific Ocean further downstream.
A spur trail shortly after the viewpoint led to the top of Makahiku Falls, but was deemed too dangerous and closed.
