Dense enchanting bamboo forest on the Pipiwai Trail

Hana To Pipiwai Trail

Hana to Pipiwai Trail

Hana, of the Road to Hana fame, is an isolated, quant coastal town on the lush eastern coast of Maui.

Many tourists opt to spend the night at Hana so they can take their time driving the scenic Hana highway making stops along the way.

A night break in Hana also sets the stage to explore the Kipahulu District of the Haleakala National Park in the early morning, the best time to hike the beautiful rainforest Pipiwai Trail to Waimoku Falls.

Hana to the Pipiwai Trail is about 12 miles, but expect to take 30-40 minutes since the road is narrow and curvy, hugging the coastline.

Directions to Pipiwai Trail from Hana

From Hana, head southeast on the Hana Highway (Route 360) towards Kipahulu. The road will soon change to the Piilani Highway (Route 31) as you move out of Hana town.

Follow the Piilani Highway for approximately 10 miles. This section of the road is less developed and can be quite narrow with occasional rough patches.

Drive slowly and be prepared for one-lane bridges and blind curves.

After about 10 miles, at about mile marker 42, you’ll reach the Kipahulu Visitor Center, part of Haleakalā National Park. Note, you will need to pay an entrance fee to enter the national park.
